Guidelines to survive
As soon as the intro music finds its way blowing through the speakers for the first time, you can already feel what kind of an immersive experience The Elder Scrolls IV aka Oblivion will be. This RPG was released in 2006 and while it already looks very modern, it has many retro aspects under which a really old-fashion character creation wizard, a clunky combat system, and last but not least, crazy stupid NPC’s who look ridiculously funny, with a voice acting which seems to be recorded by amateurs.
Oblivion often doesn’t play very intuitive. There are many bugs and also some rules you should follow before having an optimal game experience. Here are some guidelines which could help you to survive this Bug Adventure!
Bug: Stuck into the ground… because of controller!
At some point in the game I got stuck into the ground forever… I couldn’t take 1 step forward and it happened again even immediately after reloading older save games. I could only guess what the cause could be?!?
Then I discovered I had to detach my XBOX controller which was still connected on the USB slot after playing another game. Apparently, the controller was automatically set as primary control in Oblivion after launching the game.
Below is how this looked like. You can also notice at the end of the video huge frame rate drops, that was caused by another issue, see further below for that one.
Bug: Stuck into objects
Sometimes I got stuck into environmental objects like rocks or walls. I fixed this always by opening the console – using the keyboard button with the (3 2) on it – and typing tcl to turn the collision (clipping) off. After freeing yourself, do the same to turn the collision on again.
Hint: When over-encumbered
When collecting too many items without selling, the player character gets over-encumbered. At that point, player’s movements are executed very slowly which makes you vulnerable for enemy attacks.
To fix this you need to drop unnecessary and heavy items from your weapon inventory by pressing F2, and then ⇧ Shift +Click the items you want to get rid of or drag and drop them out of your inventory window.
Hint: When Slow Moving
First check if you are over-encumbered (see above). Also check the state of CAPS lock: it switches between walking and running.
Hint: Frame rate drops when turning around
As I stated above, Oblivion can suffer from frame rate drops. I noticed it especially when turning around. This was resolved for me with installing the Stutter Fix Remover and the Engine Boost mods in Nexus Mod Manager. For Oblivion, I only installed those 2 mods next to the OBSE (script extender) from www.nexusmods.com.
Spoiler: Oblivion’s Hell Gates are all about reaching the top of the highest tower where you can get a Sigil Stone.
See in video below.
Hint: When you suddenly loose health automatically when going outside in daylight, you are probably infected by vampirism
You can fix this by reloading an old savegame, visiting a shrine, or drinking a Cure Vampirism potion (Console command: player. additem 977E4 1)
Hint: Take better screenshots by removing the menus
If you want to get rid of menus in Bethesda’s games to take better screenshots, just execute the console command tm. Afterwards, don’t forget to enable the menus again by repeating the same action.
