In 2005, the first F.E.A.R was released. After 15 years, I thought it was time to revive some old memories, but first I had to fix some stuff to make it work.
First of all, if you want to play F.E.A.R. on a more recent version of Windows on a modern monitor, you will want to increase the resolution. For the F.E.A.R. base game: Run notepad and open C:\Users\Public\Documents\Monolith Productions\FEAR\settings.cfg. Change the “ScreenWidth” and “ScreenHeight” values to match your desired resolution (f.i. 3840 and 2160).For F.E.A.R. expansion packs: Run notepad and open C:\Users\Public\Documents\TimeGate Studios\FEARXP\settings.cfg. Change the “ScreenWidth” and “ScreenHeight” values to match your desired resolution (f.i. 3840 and 2160) .
Next, I ‘d recommend you to install the DirectInput Fix. Otherwise it is very likely you will encounter soon the famous “low-frame-rate-issue”. To avoid this problem, just put the DLL-file from this zip in the main folder of your F.E.A.R. installation. Note that for F.E.A.R. expansions, this DLL also has to be copied into the subfolder of each expansion!! After that, you will also notice that the font size of the subtitles and HUD is very small – up to almost unreadable – when you are using a Full-HD or 4K monitor. That is why I also advise you to install the following mod. Or, if you already know what to do, you can download the Full-HD mod and the 4K mod and place the correct files in the main folders of F.E.A.R. Whenever applicable, repeat the same for all game expansions.
As a last step, you can enable these mods by inserting their file name at the end of the corresponding Default.archcfg. For any other fixes/tweaks, I refer to this great web page. Finally, here’s some footage how my F.E.A.R. looks now on a 4K resolution!
Happy f.e.a.r.ing!
