I just finished Layers of Fear 2 after 7 hours of playtime, and I must say, it’s a sick game. With that quote I don’t mean by definition a positive thing, but it’s really sick, in the sense of crossing some boundaries which you personally can handle or not. I refer f.i. to one of the projector slides, which displays a naked boy. He is walking on his hands and feet with a smile on his face, with his butt pointing to the sky. What the hell. We are 2020 and the list of jailed pedophiles all over the globe is already long to no extent.
The game itself plays like a walking simulator stuffed with a lot of repetitive puzzling actions, like finding how to open different types of doors, selecting mysterious objects (or manipulating them in the right order) and exploring the dark environment to discover the scripted trigger which gets you further into the game.
Layers of Fear 2 its puzzles are often not very intuitive (not to say illogical, but I’m pretty sure this was done on purpose) and their challenging part is (too) often the patience, persistence and calmness you need to find the key (mostly literally) to proceed.
But the game doés score with it exquisite graphics and creepy audio, delivering a a gruesome atmosphere and I’m convinced to have spotted some references to the movies The Shining, Titanic (of course) and Seven.
After all, it was a special experience, certainly not meant for everyone, but for me, despite the negatives, still very enjoyable. Check the footage below to have an impression what this game looks and plays like.
