After completing the first Witcher game, I immediately started the second one, but that did not go as smooth as planned. Even though lowering the graphical settings, the game did not want to run fluently on my recent PC.
Especially FPS drops and constant stuttering ruined the experience. But then I found more information about the issue here, which I have quoted below. What follows next is how I managed to fix this for my own setup.
Pertinent Stuttering During Gameplay
There are two possible causes for this issue:
- Incorrect texture settings. Launch the game and navigate to the ‘Options’ menu on the launcher. Locate the option for ‘Texture Memory Size (MB)’. This is how much of your graphics card RAM is allocated to texture storage. For a 512 MB card, it is recommended set this to ‘Small’, whereas for a 1 GB card set this to ‘Large’. Allocating insufficient memory for texture storage can result in delayed texture rendering and constant stuttering during gameplay.
- Rendering too many frames in advance. To fix this use your GPU configuration panel to manually set the value of “Maximum Pre-Rendered Frames” (Nvidia) or “Flip Queue” (ATI) to 1. You may also need to limit frame rate and/or enable Vsync.
As first step of the solution for my system, I performed an Auto-detect Best Settings in The Witcher 2 its “Configuration Tool”, which can be triggered via the Options menu when launching the game.
Once there, I only altered the Texture Memory Size (MB) its value “Very Large”, as my GPU has 6 GB of VRAM. For all remaining settings, I kept the default values.
Next, I went to the NVIDIA Control Panel –> Manage 3D Settings and changed the value of the Low Latency Mode setting to “Ultra”.
After this configuration, I launched the game and could only confirm that these were the necessary actions to have a non-stuttering Witcher 2 experience.
