Recently, I had a blast with RAGE. Above all expectations, it really offered me a lot of good stuff for a FPS. An impressive, desolate wasteland, often exciting quests, NPC’s with personality, solid shooting, but fairly enough, there were some caveats. In short, it’s just some weird mixture of Halo, Doom and Fallout, but it did not taste that bad.
In RAGE, all quests are explained very clearly, but it’s not always obvious where you have to go to begin a mission. The NPC’s look very interesting though, and act often convincingly funny, seductive or intimidating. Together with the wasteland setting, the game reminded me a lot of Fallout.
However, the story and environments are made very linear. As a player you never get the real sense of freedom. Even jumping or crouching to places which seem clearly within reach, is blocked by invisible walls. The missions where you need the car are also way too simple and moreover repetitive.
Despite all of this, I still had a great time with RAGE. The story was strong enough to keep me involved for 17 hours until the quite weak ending. In the near future, I will give RAGE 2 also a try with the same level of expectation, as this worked out well this time.
