Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic might be one of the best RPG’s of all time. Not only the exceptional quality of the storytelling but also how it plays, looks and manages to convincingly represent the vastness of space, kept me playing the game for many hours in a row.
However, I had to do some tweaks, before I was really satisfied with how Kotor ran on Windows 10. By default, there’s the issue where the game keeps minimizing to desktop during cut scenes. The fix for this utterly annoying bug is to Disable Fullscreen Optimizations on the swkotor.exe, which you can find in the game’s install path.
Another problem is with the sound. By design the volume of the sound effects is simply too loud, so I had to lower that. Next to that, I also had to enable the option Force Software to fix the sound regularly being cut off totally.
My last annoyance was related to the outdated control scheme of the game. I did not like being forced to keep the right mouse button pressed all the time, just to be able to look around while running. Luckily there was also a very easy fix for this: my Dragon Age: Origins AutoHotKey script came here to the rescue!
After implementing the aforementioned fixes, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is an even greater joy to play, even in 2022.
